Maritime OneWeb & Starlink Installation Overview
Project overview
A maritime connectivity installation was successfully completed in Sweden, involving the deployment of a hybrid satellite communication system combined with a fully managed onboard IT infrastructure.
The project included the installation of an Intellian OW10HV terminal, alongside Starlink and OneWeb LEO connectivity, integrated with GEO services via Inmarsat.
The objective was to deliver reliable, redundant and high-performance connectivity, while implementing a secure and segmented IT network for both crew welfare and business operations onboard.
Delivered system
The delivered solution consisted of the following components:
- Intellian OW10HV OneWeb antenna system
- Starlink High Performance maritime system
- OneWeb LEO satellite connectivity
- GEO backup via Inmarsat network
- FleetBroadband (FBB) bonding configuration
- Managed IT network with firewall and VLAN segmentation
- VoIP telephony system onboard
This hybrid setup ensures maximum uptime through multi-orbit redundancy (LEO + GEO).
Connectivity architecture and bonding
The onboard connectivity system was configured with a multi-layer architecture, combining different satellite technologies:
- Primary connectivity via Starlink and OneWeb (LEO)
- Secondary GEO connectivity via Inmarsat
- Bonding of FBB connections for improved stability and redundancy
By integrating these systems, the vessel benefits from:
- seamless failover between LEO and GEO networks
- improved bandwidth performance
- continuous connectivity in remote maritime regions
- optimised traffic routing via firewall
IT network integration and segmentation
A key part of this project was the deployment of a managed IT system onboard, including full network segmentation:
- separation of crew and business networks using VLANs
- firewall configuration for traffic control and security
- prioritisation of operational traffic over crew usage
- secure remote monitoring and management
This ensures a secure, scalable and high-performance onboard network environment.
Maritime installation scope
As part of this marine installation, the following activities were performed:
- installation and commissioning of Intellian OW10HV antenna
- installation of Starlink High Performance system
- integration of OneWeb connectivity
- configuration of Inmarsat GEO backup system
- setup and optimisation of FBB bonding
- installation of firewall and VLAN segmentation
- deployment of VoIP telephony system
- full network testing, optimisation and commissioning
All work was carried out according to marine IT and satellite installation standards.
System performance and reliability
The installed system provides:
- high-speed LEO connectivity via Starlink and OneWeb
- stable enterprise connectivity via Intellian OW10HV
- reliable GEO fallback via Inmarsat
- bonded FBB connectivity for additional redundancy
- secure and segmented onboard IT network
This ensures continuous connectivity for both operational and crew communication needs.
Application
This type of maritime installation is suitable for:
- commercial vessels
- offshore vessels
- vessels operating in remote regions
- fleet operators requiring hybrid connectivity
- ships requiring managed IT and VoIP systems
Key benefits of hybrid maritime connectivity
A professionally executed hybrid connectivity solution offers:
- multi-orbit redundancy (LEO + GEO)
- improved uptime and reliability
- secure network segmentation (crew vs business)
- optimised bandwidth management
- reliable VoIP communication onboard
- scalable IT infrastructure for future expansion
Why hybrid satellite systems are the future
Modern vessels increasingly rely on hybrid satellite systems combining LEO and GEO technologies. These systems provide unmatched reliability, ensuring continuous operations even in remote offshore regions.
By integrating multiple satellite providers, vessels benefit from improved uptime, better bandwidth distribution and enhanced operational efficiency. This approach is quickly becoming the standard for maritime connectivity worldwide.
