On 7 October 2026 Satcenter completed a connectivity installation and network commissioning project on a vessel in Rotterdam. The vessel received an Intellian OW10 terminal for OneWeb, a Starlink High Performance Gen 2 system and an LTE backup connection through KVH TracNet, all brought together in one onboard network with clear WAN priorities.

Project overview

The scope combined two low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite services with a cellular backup. Alongside the antenna work, our engineers reviewed the vessel's existing onboard network and completed the configuration so that the Starlink, OneWeb and LTE connections work together in a coordinated setup instead of as three separate systems.

Scope of work

Installing OneWeb and Starlink

Our engineers installed both satellite systems and integrated them into the vessel's communications network:

Configuring the KVH TracNet LTE backup

The KVH TracNet LTE connection was configured as an additional backup option. In port and along the coast, wherever mobile network coverage is available, the vessel now has a third connection to fall back on.

Checking and commissioning the vessel network

The work covered the complete vessel network, including a review of the existing configuration and the commissioning of the combined setup. The connection priorities were configured as follows:

  1. Starlink: primary connection for normal internet use on board.
  2. OneWeb: secondary WAN and the alternative satellite connection.
  3. LTE: backup connection where cellular coverage is available.

With these priorities in place, the satellite and LTE links form one consistent arrangement: traffic uses Starlink by default, moves to OneWeb when needed, and can fall back on LTE near the coast.

Result

The vessel now has two independent satellite internet connections supported by an LTE backup option. The completed work included:

  • OneWeb and Starlink installation and integration
  • KVH TracNet LTE backup configuration
  • complete onboard network review and commissioning
  • defined WAN priorities for primary, secondary and backup connectivity

Connectivity and onboard IT in one installation

Installing new antennas is only part of a vessel connectivity project. The onboard network also needs to be configured so that the available connections are used in the intended order. Without that step, a second satellite link can sit unused, or failover can behave in ways the crew does not expect.

For this project in Rotterdam, Satcenter handled both the connectivity installation and the vessel network commissioning, so the owner had one team responsible for antennas, WAN configuration and onboard IT.

Frequently asked questions

Two independent LEO satellite services give the vessel redundancy. If one network has an outage or reduced coverage, traffic moves to the other, so the crew and onboard systems stay connected.

KVH TracNet adds a cellular connection that the vessel can use in port and along the coast wherever mobile coverage is available. It acts as a third path when both satellite links are unavailable.

Starlink is the primary connection for normal internet use, OneWeb is the secondary WAN and alternative satellite link, and LTE is the backup where cellular coverage is available.

Yes. Our engineers attend vessels in Rotterdam and other Dutch and Belgian ports, install the antennas and commission the onboard network within the vessel's port call.
