Project overview

A maritime connectivity installation was successfully completed in Algeciras, involving the deployment and integration of a multi-orbit satellite communication system combining LEO and GEO technologies.

The objective of the project was to deliver high-availability internet connectivity onboard by combining OneWeb, Starlink and KNS Ku-band VSAT, alongside a fully managed onboard IT network infrastructure.

Delivered system

The delivered solution consisted of the following components:

  • OneWeb LEO satellite antenna system
  • Starlink maritime antenna system (high-speed LEO connectivity)
  • KNS Ku-band VSAT antenna (GEO backup and stability layer)
  • Multi-WAN firewall solution for intelligent traffic management
  • Fully managed vessel IT network (segmented crew & operational networks)
  • Rack integration and structured cabling infrastructure

This hybrid setup ensures maximum uptime by combining low latency LEO connectivity with reliable GEO fallback.

Connectivity architecture and redundancy

The onboard network was designed with a multi-layer redundancy architecture, enabling seamless failover between different satellite systems:

  • Primary: Starlink (high-speed, low latency internet)
  • Secondary: OneWeb (enterprise-grade LEO connectivity)
  • Backup: Ku-band VSAT via KNS antenna

The firewall system dynamically manages traffic routing, ensuring:

  • automatic failover between providers
  • bandwidth prioritisation (business vs crew welfare)
  • secure network segmentation
  • remote monitoring and management

This architecture guarantees continuous connectivity even in challenging maritime conditions.

System performance and reliability

The installed connectivity system provides:

  • high-speed internet via LEO satellite networks
  • stable global coverage through GEO Ku-band backup
  • seamless failover without service interruption
  • secure and segmented onboard IT environment
  • scalable infrastructure for future upgrades

The solution ensures business-critical connectivity and improved crew welfare onboard.

Application

This type of maritime connectivity installation is suitable for:

  • commercial vessels
  • offshore support vessels
  • tankers and container ships
  • offshore platforms
  • vessels requiring hybrid LEO/GEO connectivity
  • managed IT and crew welfare networks

Maritime installation scope

As part of this marine installation, the following activities were performed:

  • installation and alignment of OneWeb, Starlink and KNS antennas
  • RF cabling and integration into existing vessel infrastructure
  • rack installation and power distribution setup
  • configuration of firewall and multi-WAN routing
  • VLAN segmentation for crew and operational networks
  • full IT network deployment and optimisation
  • system testing, verification and commissioning
  • remote monitoring setup and handover

All work was executed according to marine installation standards and best practices.
